XIAOMI Redmi Note 9 – Full Review

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 is one of the brand’s really cool phones, which sells at a very low price. It has a decent chipset and an extremely good battery life. It also comes with IR blaster, which a very cool and useful feature that allows you to control certain appliances, like TV for example. This makes the phone really good, despite low price. After all, there is no need to pay a lot for quality.

The phone features a typical modern design and is very nicely shaped. There are no sharp edges. Corners are nicely curved. Back is also curved, which gives it a really cool and expensive look. Although, we know that this is rather cheap phone and comes at very affordable prices. You will find the selfie camera to be positioned in the top left corner, rather than in the middle as we can see on most phones. The phone is quite large and somewhat heavy. Therefore some people find it difficult to hold. As far as materials go, we can see that the phone uses very protective Gorilla glass 5 to cover the front side. This makes the phone resistant to drops from certain heights and also makes it resistant to scratches. Otherwise, the back is plastic and so is the frame. The phone is somewhat water resistant, but don’t drop it in the pool or something. It just means that it is resistant to rain.

Redmi Note 9 features a 6.53 inch IPS LCD display. It has a 1080p Full HD resolution rather than QHD resolution, which is a thing of more premium phones. It also features a standard 60 Hz refresh rate. However, the pixel density here is really high – 395 ppi. Content on the screen looks pretty decent. The contrast is just okay, but it’s not bad for an LCD screen. Brightness can be adjusted, but again it’s not the most impressive feature. Colours can be easily adjusted in settings and you can make the pretty accurate.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 runs on a Helio G85 chipset. This is a very power efficient chip. However, the overall performance isn’t as good as on Snapdragon. Still it works well enough and can run all sorts of tasks. The phone is even appropriate for gaming. However, you might get better experience on phones with better chips. The GPU is Mali-G52 MC2, which reduces the power consumption and ensures for a long gaming experience. As far as RAM goes, you will probably get a version with 4 GB of RAM, however, there are options for 6 GB. There is plenty of storage of this phone. You are most likely to find a version with 128 GB of internal storage, however you might also stumble across the one with 64 GB. In any case, storage is further expandable.

The phone features a quad camera setup. Here you will find one 48 MP main camera with PDAF, 8 MP ultrawide camera, 2 MP macro camera with autofocus, and a 2 MP depth sensor. Daytime shots taken with the main camera are decent. However, the overall quality is behind the competition. Sharpness could be improved and there could be more detail. Therefore images appear a bit softer. Still, the colors look pretty good. Using zoom reduces image quality even more. Photos have more noise and do not come out really sharp. Portraits look more or less good, but only in good light. Low light performance is surprisingly good. Photos have a wide dynamic range with nicely preserved highlights. However, the images are still soft.

Video recording is again not the best. There is no option for 4K videos and you can only record up to 1080p. This is really disappointing as most phones these days support 4K and some even 8K. Videos appear soft and the dynamic range is pretty narrow. There is still a lot of room for improvements in this area.

The battery endurance on this phone is simply amazing and is one of the best you will find. The phone is equipped with a large 5020 mAh non-removable battery. It can easily last over 120 hours on a full charge and will get you through the day with no problem at all, so you can relax and enjoy. However, once empty it can take a while to charge. You will get 18W charging adapter with which you will have your phone back at 100% in a little less than 2 hours. You get an option for reverse charging.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 is a good phone that comes at a very low price. You get a really good battery and a solid chipset. However, don’t buy this phone for the purpose of photography. Anyhow, this is a perfect phone for basic users that do not wish to spend a lot of money. Therefore, we recommend it as an entry level phone.
