5 Best Fujifilm lenses for Portraits – A Complete Guide 👌

Best Fujifilm lenses for Portraits
Fujifilm lenses for Portraits

Portraiture in one form or another is the most popular photographic activity there is. Accordingly, there’s a fair bit of mystique around portraits and the right lens to use. So first of all, is there such a thing as a portrait lens? Well, not literally. Any lens can and has been used for portrait purposes. However, for reasons of tradition, aesthetics, and practicality, certain lenses are more commonly used than others. In this article we will look at what is the best Fujifilm lenses for Portraits. One of the first considerations to make, when buying a portrait lens, is getting the right focal length.

What focal length is best for Portraits?

Generally speaking, portraits are supposed to make the subject look reasonably good. So unless you’re going for comedy value or you’re taking a full-body shot in the context of a given scene, it’s generally best to go for shorter telephotos than wider-angle lenses.

Really long telephotos are typically unhelpful because they require huge distances from camera to subject. This can be fine outdoors, but it’s problematic in smaller studios where there’s simply no room to move further back.

The convention is to use a short telephoto, which has a focal length of at least 85mm on a full-frame camera. This focal length gives you a flattering perspective when shooting someone’s head and shoulders.

Generally, 85mm, 100mm, and 135mm are popular portrait lenses. When using a subframe sensor camera like Fujifilm cameras, you can go for slightly shorter lenses, such as 50mm through 85mm. The way to calculate the focal length on a subframe sensor camera is to multiply the focal length of the lens by the crop factor of the sensor. For instance, if you have a Fujifilm X T4 camera with a APS-C crop factor of 1.6 and a lens with a focal length of 50mm, then the actual focal length is 50mm*1.6=80mm. Since this is an article on Fujifilm lenses and not necessarily only Fujifilm cameras, I will cover both options, best Fujifilm portrait lenses for a full-frame camera and an APS-C camera.

What are the Best Fujifilm lenses for Portraits?

Now the focal length is only one aspect of the lens. There are many other factors that are important for a good lens, like the quality of the glass, optics, manufacturing quality, how the lens deals with different aberrations, etc. I will not bore you with all the details here, but I’ve used many Fujifilm lenses, so I will list the lenses I believe are the best, considering quality and appropriate for portrait photography. In the table below you can find the lenses I’ve chosen. Below the table, you can find a detailed description of each lens.

What are the Best Fujifilm PRIME lenses for Portraits?

Here I describe 3 prime Fujifilm lenses that are a good choice for portraits and offer great quality or value.

Fujinon XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Lens – BEST PRIME LENS FOR PORTRAITS

Let’s start with Fujinon XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR. It has a focal length of 80mm (128mm on a 1.6 crop sensor) which fits our criteria for portrait photography. It is easily the best macro lens ever made by anyone. Razor-sharp beyond belief and it is Fujifilm’s fastest AF lens. It is as perfect as an optical instrument can be. The lens has internal stabilization (OIS), making it a great option when using the camera handheld, and it is weather resistant (WR). The lens isn’t only suitable for portraits, but also for macro, product photography, telephoto landscape, weddings, video & general purpose!

Fujifilm XF35mmF1.4 R –  BEST PRIME LENS QUALITY/PRICE

The second prime lens I would like to mention is Fujifilm XF35mmF1.4 R. It has a focal length of 35mm (56mm on a 1.6 crop sensor), so it falls slightly short of the criteria we set for portrait photography, but its quality to price ratio is just too good not to mention here. The lens can be used for portraiture & street photography, as it can catch a wide range of field due to its shorter focal length. It has an amazing bokeh. It does have a few shortcomings: Aperture chatter, slow and noisy AF, NOT the best for video use.

Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R – BEST PRIME LENS MICROCONTRAST

The third prime lens I really like to use for portraiture is Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R. It has a focal length of 56mm (90mm on a 1.6 crop sensor). This lens is perfect for portrait photography on an APS-C crop sensor camera. It is an absolute winner in micro-contrast for tonality. The lens produces cotton candy soft bokeh due to the gradated internal AD filter. It is perfect for portraiture & weddings but one of the shortcomings is that it is very expensive and it is not suitable for video use.

Having a zoom lens is always a good idea, as it expands your options. With a good zoom lens, you are not limited to only one type of photography, as its dynamic focal length allows you to explore different photography genres. Final Thoughts

If you decide to buy a zoom lens it is good to remember that on a full-frame camera you should shoot with a focal length between 85mm and 135mm. In case you have a subframe sensor camera (like Fujifilm APS-C cameras with 1.6 crop factor) use the focal length between 50mm and 85mm.

If you decide to buy a prime lens I would recommend Fujinon XF80mm F2.8. If you have a subframe sensor camera, consider Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 for that amazing micro-contrast tonality. In case you are shopping on a budget, the best lens for portrait photography is Fujifilm XF35mm F1.4.

I hope you found my guide useful and I wish you tons of professional portrait photos and happy photo models🙂.
