XIAOMI Redmi Note 8 – Full Review

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is a good mid-range phone that has some cool features and sells at a very low price. The phone has a really cool and modern design, a good battery, and a solid chipset. We really get our money worth with this phone. It is for sure quality at a low price.

The phone features a premium design, despite the fact that it is just a mid-range phone. Additionally, the phone is very nicely shaped and has a modern look. There are no sharp edges. Corners are nicely curved. Note 8 still has its selfie camera positioned on the top middle, unlike the newer Xiaomi Redmi Note 9. The back of the phone is flat and comes in really beautiful colours. The phone is neither too big nor too small, so it fits in the hand nicely. You can also use it with just a single hand. As far as materials go, we can see that the phone uses very protective Gorilla Glass 5 to cover the front as well as the back. This makes the phone resistant to drops from certain heights and also makes it resistant to scratches. Otherwise, the frame is made out of plastic. It is also splash resistant, which will protect from the raindrops but don’t mess around the pool with it.

Redmi Note 8 features a 6.3 inch IPS LCD display. It has a 1080p Full HD resolution rather than QHD resolution, which is a thing of more premium phones. It also features a standard 60 Hz refresh rate and there is no support for HDR. However, the pixel density here is really high – 409 ppi and it’s even better than what we saw on the newer Redmi Note 9. Content on the screen looks pretty fine. The contrast is good and not bad for an LCD screen at all. Brightness can be adjusted, but again it’s not the most impressive feature. Colours are pretty accurate but can be further adjusted in the settings.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is powered by Snapdragon 665 chipset. The power efficiency on this chip is simply excellent. The overall performance is quite good and it gives a really good processing power. The phone can be used for just about anything. It is even appropriate for gaming. The GPU is Adreno 610, which reduces the power consumption and ensures a long gaming experience. As far as RAM goes, you will probably get a version with 4 GB of RAM, however, there are options for 6 GB. There is plenty of storage on this phone. You will probably find a version with 64 GB of internal storage; however, you can also get a version with 128 GB. In any case, storage is further expandable.

The phone features quad-camera setup, which is again a feature of good and premium phones. Here you will find one 48 MP main camera with PDAF, 8 MP ultrawide camera, 2 MP macro camera with autofocus, and a 2 MP depth sensor. This is the same camera setup that you will find on the newer Redmi Note 9. Anyway, photos taken during the day with the main camera are decent. However, the overall quality is a little behind the competition. Sharpness could be improved and there could be more detail. Therefore images appear a bit softer. Still, colours look pretty good. Using zoom reduces image quality even more. Photos have more noise and do not come out really sharp. Portraits look more or less good, but only in good light. Low light performance is surprisingly good. Photos have a wide dynamic range with nicely preserved highlights. However, the images are still soft.

Video recording is in fact better than what you will find on Redmi Note 9. Here you actually have an option for 4K video recording. You can also record up to 1080p. In general, videos are more or less decent, however, there is still room for improvement. Videos could be sharper and the dynamic range could be wider. Otherwise, it is okay and average users will not see these flaws as such a big problem.

The battery life on this phone is quite decent. The phone is equipped with a large 4000 mAh non-removable battery. It can last for quite a while, depending on the type of usage of course. However, it will get you through the day with no problem at all. You will get an 18W charging adapter with which you will have your phone back at 100% in less than 2 hours. It is important to note that there are no options for wireless charging or reverse wireless charging.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is a good phone that comes at a very low price. It has a lot of cool features that many people like. For example a modern design, decent chipset, and good battery life. It is just perfect for those of you that are looking for a good phone and do not wish to spend too much on it. It certainly has our recommendations.
