SONY Xperia 5 II – Full Review

Sony Xperia 5 II is a flagship phone of 2020 that truly lives up to its promises. Here we can find all the features that we need and all the features that make this phone so great. You get an excellent chipset,  great cameras, and a very good battery life. On top of everything, it all comes together in a beautiful design. This is a phone that is certainly worth the money we are paying for it.

The phone features a premium design. It looks amazing. The phone is very beautiful and aesthetic. There isn’t a single thing wrong with the design. The edges are curved instead of sharp as we have seen on Xperia 1 II. The corners are also nicely shaped and the back features a glossy, mirror-like finish, which gives it a really cool and expensive look. It is certainly attention-grabbing and is bound to turn some heads. Furthermore, it feels very light and thing in the hands. That makes it perfect for both single-handed and two-handed use. The front and back of the phone are both covered with premium Gorilla Glass 6. This type of glass offers solid protection to the phone as it can survive drops onto hard and rough surfaces from up to 5.2 feet, which is about 1.6 meters. The frame is made out of aluminum. The phone also features water and dust resistance.

Sony Xperia 5 II has a 6.1 inch OLED display. It features a full HD resolution, which is 1080p. Additionally, it brings a very fast refresh rate that can go as high as 120 Hz. This means that swiping will look super smooth. The pixel density is extremely good here – 449 ppi. This basically means that when you are watching a video or playing a game, the image will be crystal clear. Besides sharpness, you will find that colours here are very accurate, but can be further adjusted to your liking. However, maximum brightness could be improved. There is also an “Always on” feature, which will show you time and notifications even when your phone is in sleep mode.

The phone is powered by Snapdragon 865 5G chipset, which is known to be an extremely good chip. The performance here is awesome, as expected.  Xperia 5 II is appropriate for more complex uses and can run just about any game you will find. The gaming experience here is simply excellent. It is truly flagship-worthy. The phone is very power efficient as well, so it will make your gaming experience even longer. The chipset is further paired with Adreno 650, which is known to be a very good and capable graphic processing unit. One thing you will notice is that the phone becomes warmer during heavy use. However, it is nothing extreme and will not overheat. Furthermore, the phone has 8 GB of RAM. This is more than enough for an average user and advanced user as well. It is also enough to execute every task and do all sorts of other stuff. From playing games to running all sorts of apps, nothing is too much. You are even able to multitask. As far as internal storage goes, you can get either 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. In any case, you can expand it, if you feel like you need more space.

Xperia 5 II features a triple camera setup. Here you will find an excellent 12 MP main camera with dual-pixel PDAF and OIS. Additionally, there is also a 12 MP ultra-wide camera and 12 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS. You also get HDR support. In general, photos taken during the day with the main camera look great. There is an excellent amount of detail, wide dynamic range, and practically zero noise. The photos are also very sharp with natural-looking colours. Portrait mode has an excellent subject separation and a very good focus, despite missing ToF camera. There is again plenty of detail with good-looking colours. Zoom photos taken with telephoto camera are just as good as you would expect. They are very sharp with great dynamic range. The quality can easily compare to the one from the main camera. Lowlight photography gives you good results. Highlights and shadows are nicely preserved. Colours have good saturation and look pretty great. Additionally, there is also plenty of detail and a wide dynamic range as well. You can get some really good pictures and that is even if you are using telephoto camera.

As for the video recording, you are able to make 4K videos at 24, 30, 60, or 120 fps. The quality here is great and you also get HDR support as well. Colors are spot on and there is plenty of detail featured in the video. All of this helps you get that natural look. Even while using zoom, we still get a great result with excellent sharpness. Additionally, you can also stick to normal videos that go up to 1080p. Those look good as well.

The Xperia 5 II comes with a 4000 mAh non-removable battery. The battery life here is excellent. The phone can last over 100 hours on a full charge. However, this depends on the type of usage. In any case, it can easily go through the day without a problem. Once empty, you will have to recharge it with a 21W charger. The charging speed is pretty decent. You can get from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes, as advertised.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, Sony Xperia 5 II features a great chipset, a very good camera, and a solid battery life. These are the qualities of a great phone, which this one certainly is. It is appropriate for all types of users: beginners, average and advanced. It is truly worthy to be called a flagship. Therefore it gets our recommendation.
