Wide-angle lenses are a favorite of both landscape and indoor photographers because of their ability to capture large areas in a single image. Wide-angle is generally considered to be anything less than the 50mm focal length equivalent on 35mm film. In this article, we will focus on what is the best wide-angle landscape lens for Sony a6000 in particular.
What focal length is best for Landscape Photography? – Wide Angle
Wide-angle lenses in the 24-35mm focal length range are the most popular, letting you capture more in the frame without the distortion problems sometimes seen in wider lenses. True landscape fans will tell you that you can never get too wide, though, so 14-20mm is a popular choice with the outdoor crowd.
With lower focal lengths you can start to see the effects of wider angles where there is more of the foreground included in the scene. In general, the lower the focal length of a lens, the more foreground will be included on the photo.
Although you can use a wide-angle lens as a conventional lens that just takes in more of a scene, these lenses really shine when used to their full potential in landscape. The greater depth of field with shorter focal lengths allows you to have more of your scene in sharp focus. An effective way to use wide-angle lenses in your composition is to shoot low, with a foreground subject to draw the eye into the photo.
Finally, there is the ultra-wide-angle lens known as a fisheye lens, which comes in two flavors: the familiar circular frame, and the full-frame rectangular fisheye. Both types of fisheye lenses have extreme distortion, but that’s part of the appeal to this type of image, and with proper composition, fisheye lenses can make for very interesting effects.

Now the focal length is only one aspect of the lens. There are many other factors that are important for a good lens, like the quality of the glass, optics, manufacturing quality, how the lens deals with different aberrations, etc. I will not bore you with all the details here, but I’ve used many different wide-angle lenses with my Sony a6000, so I will list the lenses I believe are the best suited for landscape photography. I’ve narrowed down the choice to just 3 E-mount lenses.

Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS it’s an ultra-wide crop sensor zoom lens from sony. You’re not gonna find it so much in a professional’s bag just because it is a crop sensor lens with a maximum aperture of f/4. This lens is very specific in its use. It’s not a huge focal range, from 10 to 18, or basically a 15 to 27 millimeter equivalent on a crop sensor camera.
You’re gonna be able to use it for things like real estate, landscape, cityscape, and that type of photography. It’s gonna be OK for video and vlogging because you’re gonna be able to fit a lot of stuff in that frame, but I wouldn’t really say it’s a professional lens by any means, although you can produce some fantastic results.
BUILD & FEATURES
The lens is a great size and weight, measuring only 3.75 inches with the lens hood installed and only 2.5 without. It’s very light at about 225 grams or about half a pound and it does extend just a little bit when you zoom, but if you’re using the lens hood you won’t even notice.
The overall quality and feel of this lens are decent for what it is for the price, but it is nowhere near the best. Unfortunately, you won’t find any buttons or switches on this lens whatsoever, and both the zoom and focus rings turn confidently and firmly.
On the front, you’ll find 62-millimeter filter threads and yes it does accommodate filters as well. It also has a great minimum focus distance of 0.8 feet or just under 10 inches allowing you to get up close and personal with your subjects. It’s also image-stabilized letting you get nice and crispy images and video at slower shutter speeds.
It’s got a nice sturdy metal mount, but unfortunately, it lacks a little rubber gasket for confidence when it comes to weather sealing. Overall for the build, it’s decently made with great size and weight and a few features that are nice – I give it three and a half stars.
Let’s look at the value of the lens. This is a pricey lens, but given the competition, which there really is none, and how well this thing performs, its value is actually pretty good. I give it four stars when it comes to performance.
This lens performs very well in pretty much every regard. Its autofocus is fast and basically silent, although being an ultra-wide lens it’s not overly demanding. This lens only has an 8-millimeter focal range which doesn’t sound like a lot but at that huge ultra-wide zoom angles every millimeter makes a pretty big difference.
Image stabilization is a great feature to have however in the video it really doesn’t work that well. I find myself using this lens when there’s plenty of light or on a tripod. It’s gonna be great for things like real estate or interior shots and landscapes.
Looking at the sharpness and the optics of this lens, the best is gonna be around f/8. For the most part, a fantastic performance at 18 millimeters, and overall I’m impressed by this lens when it comes to distortion and vignetting wide.
All-around great performance for both the sharpness and the optics of this lens.
It’s an ultra-wide-angle lens with seven aperture blades so you shouldn’t expect the world out of this thing and
after all that’s definitely not what you buy this lens. Having said that, it’s actually better than I expected.
I give it four stars
I’d have to say this lens is probably still your best option for an APS-C camera.
It’s a little bit pricey but when you look at the performance and what you’re getting, the size, the weight, it’s just a fantastic option.

This is Tamron’s version of Sony’s e-mount ultra-wide lens the 17 to 28 F 2.8. Don’t confuse it with its brother the 28 to 75 F 2.8 which has been wildly popular having an almost cult-like following
It feels good and it’s made well, it’s tough rubberized zoom and focus rings make this feel like a little armored tank, but it definitely feels like a hobbyist lens. I do like it though. The size and weight really make this lens shine and only 420 grams, it’s very versatile and what it can do and where you can take it. The rubberized coating feels very nice and sturdy and just gives you a bit of confidence when it comes to zooming and focusing.
The focus ring is electronically coupled to your camera and it’s smooth and accurate. On the front element, you’ll find a convenient fluorine coating, and basically, that allows water and oil to be repelled. One thing that I’m not actually happy to see, is how the lens actually extends when you zoom. It may open this lens up for unnecessary dust and moisture. It does have a nice solid metal as well as a beautiful rigid rubber gasket, giving you that extra little bit of confidence when it comes to weather sealing. I give it 4 stars for the build.
The value is not hard to see. For a fast ultra-wide lens there’s really not that much available when it comes to Sony.
The Tamron 17 to 28 does offer a lot and the value is definitely there so in this case, I give it 4.5 stars.
When it comes to video I have to say it is definitely not the best I’ve seen. Sometimes it has problems autofocusing the subject. One good thing about autofocus is, that it is basically silent. When it comes to stills I had absolutely no problems. I found this lens to be very responsive and accurate. This lens is fairly sharp throughout the entire focal range.
When it comes to bokeh, it doesn’t absolutely blow you away, I would say it’s about average. It is a very capable lens for video and will let you get a lot of interesting shots. Its size and weight make it perfect for gimbal work. But make sure to keep in mind that it’s not image stabilized.
Looking at performance as a whole this lens does perform relatively well in both photo and video, just don’t expect it to blow you away in any one particular aspect. I give it 4 stars.

It’s what you’d expect of a Sony lens. It’s awesomely small, coming into only 3.88 inches long and just over 3 inches wide. Its solid metal construction and it weighs just over a pound.
You’ll find a large grippy zoom ring in the middle with a smaller focus ring in the front, which is also metal.
Sony lenses tend to collect dirt and dust pretty easily, so this lens does come with a lens hood to protect your lens.
Although it does have a nice sturdy metal mount it does lack proper weather sealing. For build quality, I give it 4 stars.
Coming in around 1,200$ it’s not a cheap lens, but comparing its features and performance to other lenses at much higher prices I gave it 4 stars for value.
Does the lens justify the big price tag? The autofocus system is snappy, it’s fast, it’s silent and like a lot of Sony lenses, it does the job and works great. It’s not the best in low-light situations and of course, it is an f4, but it’s never let me down.
This lens is a great landscape, real estate, and portrait lens. Its bokeh is average, but the eye autofocus works great even in low-light. Personally, I love this lens for journalistic type photography and of course landscapes. Keep in mind, one feature you are paying for in this lens is image stabilization, which goes great with Sony’s ibis systems in their newer cameras.
Let’s look at the sharpness and the performance of this lens in more detail. As far as wide-angle lenses, go pretty good performance. I’d say I’ve never had a problem with it, I’ve always taken nice pictures and I’ve been happy with the results. For the price, you expect absolutely no less. As far as performance goes, image stabilization, incredible sharpness, and a great focal range, I give performance four stars.

This is a great versatile lens and there are a lot of great things I like about it and a few that I don’t.
